Sphynx vs Devon Rex

Two elfin, alien-looking breeds that are incredibly affectionate and playful. Both are great for people who want unique, people-oriented cats.

Sphynx cat

Sphynx

The famous "naked cat" — not actually hairless but covered in fine peach-fuzz. Warm, wrinkly, and desperately affectionate. A living hot water bottle.

Devon Rex cat

Devon Rex

The "pixie cat" with huge ears, elfin face, and soft wavy coat. Mischievous, clownish, and loves to perch on shoulders like a parrot.

💡 About "Hypoallergenic" Cats

Neither breed is truly hypoallergenic. Cat allergies are caused by proteins in saliva and skin (Fel d 1), not fur. However, both breeds may produce fewer reactions for some people: Sphynx because they're easier to bathe, and Devon Rex because they shed minimally. Always spend time with a breed before committing!

🧥 Coat & Grooming

Sphynx: Not truly bald — has fine peach-fuzz. Needs weekly baths because skin oils aren't absorbed by fur. Ears and nails need regular cleaning. No brushing needed, but definitely not maintenance-free!

Devon Rex: Soft, wavy coat that sheds minimally. Very low grooming needs — occasional gentle brushing. No bathing typically required. Their coat can be patchy or very thin in places.

🌡️ Temperature Sensitivity

Sphynx: Gets cold easily and sunburns in direct sunlight. Needs sweaters in winter, sunscreen in summer. Love heated beds, sunny spots, and burrowing under blankets.

Devon Rex: Also seeks warmth but has more protection from their thin coat. Still love warm spots but are less temperature-sensitive than Sphynx.

🎭 Personality

Sphynx: Extroverted attention-seekers. They NEED to be with their people. Will meet you at the door, sleep under the covers, and follow you to the bathroom. Social with everyone, including strangers.

Devon Rex: Mischievous pixies with a sense of humor. Love perching on shoulders, stealing food, and playing clown. Equally social but with a more playful, kitten-like energy that never fades.

👀 Appearance

Sphynx: Wrinkly, leather-like skin that feels like warm suede. Pot-belly, lemon-shaped eyes, large ears. Visible skin patterns and colors. Can look "intense" or alien.

Devon Rex: Huge bat-like ears, pixie face with high cheekbones, and impish expression. Wavy coat gives a softer, more approachable look. Often described as having an "ET" appearance.
