Overview
The Maine Coon is America's native longhaired cat and one of the largest domesticated breeds. Known as 'gentle giants,' they combine impressive size with a friendly, dog-like personality. They're excellent mousers with a rugged appearance suited to harsh New England winters.
Health
Maine Coons can be prone to Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), hip dysplasia, and Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). Regular cardiac screening is recommended. Despite their size, they're generally healthy cats with proper care and can live 12-15 years.
Care & Grooming
Their semi-long coat needs brushing 2-3 times weekly to prevent matting. They enjoy interactive play and need space to climb and explore. Provide sturdy cat trees that can support their weight. They often enjoy water and may 'help' with dishes!
